Ed van Weeren was born in 1946 in Amsterdam. The sculptor John Abel was his first teacher, by whom the accent was the use of wood. Working with wood still has a slight preference when making the choice for the material of a new sculpture. He got more trained in thinking in three dimensional space and working with other materials, like modelling-clay and bronze, by Marja Thijssen, a sculptress and modeller. Since 2001 he works full-time in creating and shaping objects, alternately in his studio in Almere and in "En face de l'église " (Le Rialet, France)

The making of iron sculptures started in France. The idea is that in winter most gardens look kind of sad, while it is very simple to solve that problem. By putting some colorful sculptures in place of flowers. Metal is chosen, because it doesn't need a lot of maintenance. Wood, ceramic or a soft stone need so much more maintenance. Of course the hard stones, like granite are beautiful for outside sculptures, but that's a different story, since the making requires much more time and special tools compared to wood or soft stones.
